Applying with NSFAS

From funding to front door: how to apply with NSFAS

Jezreel is NSFAS-accredited. This is the whole journey, in the order it happens.

01

Apply for funding

Apply for NSFAS or your bursary first, through the funder's own portal.

02

Apply to Jezreel

Choose your campus and room type, and apply online in a few minutes. Pick a first-choice residence and up to two more.

03

Send your documents

Upload what we need. The application checklist lists every document.

04

Secure your room

Accepted? Pay the R250 agency fee and sign your lease online. Leases are emailed from 4 January 2027. Your room is only reserved once both are done.

05

Move in

Move-ins open on 11 January 2027. Collect your keys and settle in. The Student Portal has everything from day one.

FAQs

Student accommodation FAQs

Answers to what students and parents ask most. Can't find yours? We're a message away.

Contact us
Do I have to pay a top-up with NSFAS?

No. Under UJ policy there are no top-ups: the maximum approved NSFAS rate covers your rent in full.

How many students share a room?

A maximum of 2 students, of the same gender, share a semi-sharing room.

Is laundry free?

Yes. Laundry is free, with no tokens to buy.

Can I convert my NSFAS allowance to cash?

No. NSFAS accommodation allowances can't be converted to cash. University policy doesn't allow it.

Are sleepovers allowed?

No. Sleepovers are not allowed, and visitors must leave by 22:00. In rare cases, such as a parent travelling from far who needs to stay one night, management may give prior written approval where the room arrangement allows. Without that approval, a student found with an overnight guest is fined R250 per guest per night and may face disciplinary action. The fine is a penalty for breaking the rule, not a fee that makes a sleepover allowed.

Can I apply for more than one residence?

You submit one application, but it can include more than one residence. In step 3, Choose Your Residence, choose your first choice: this is your primary application. Then mark up to two other residences with Also consider. We'll look at those if your first choice is full.

Is transport to campus provided?

Yes, from residences more than 2 km from UJ APK. University policy only requires transport beyond 2 km.

Are all residences NSFAS-accredited?

All but one. 21 of our 22 residences are NSFAS-accredited, and one residence operates strictly as a cash property. Each residence page shows its status.

Can I bring my own fridge?

Yes. You may bring your own fridge.

How much notice do I give to move out?

One calendar month's written notice, given on the 1st of the month, as set out in your lease.

Is WiFi included?

Yes. WiFi is free and uncapped, so there's nothing to top up.

Is there backup power and water during outages?

Only at some residences, and only partly. Please ask us what applies to the residence you're interested in.

Backup power: at residences with a generator, it keeps some communal lights and the WiFi on during load-shedding or a power outage. It does not power bedrooms or appliances such as kettles, heaters, hair dryers or stoves. Some residences have a plug at security where you can charge your phone.

Backup water: residences with a borehole keep running water during a municipal water outage. Others have a JoJo storage tank: once the tank is empty, there's no water until the municipal supply is back, so please use water sparingly during an outage.

Are the rooms furnished?

Yes. Every room is fully furnished.

Can I cook in my room?

No. Cooking in rooms isn't allowed under UJ policy because it is a fire and safety (OHS) hazard.

What happens if my funding isn't approved?

You are liable for rent at the cash rate for your room for the months you stayed.

Can I stay over December and January for exams?

Yes, if you're writing supplementary exams. Arrange it with your Property Manager and show proof on the UJ portal. A daily rate applies.

Is parking free?

Yes. Parking is free, subject to terms and conditions that you agree to before bringing a vehicle onto the property.

Can I store my things over December and January?

Yes. Storage guidelines for the December–January break are emailed to students before 1 November.

What are the important dates for 2027?

Leases are emailed from Monday 4 January 2027.
Move-ins open on Monday 11 January 2027.
Your lease starts on 1 February 2027. Arriving after 1 February? Tell your Property Manager before then.
Classes start on Monday 8 February 2027.

Staying with us in 2026? Supplementary exams run from 23 to 27 November, and everyone moves out by 30 November 2026.

I've been accepted. Is my room secured?

Not yet. Accepted isn't the same as secured. Your room is only reserved once you've paid the R250 agency fee (non-refundable) and signed your 2027 lease. Until then it depends on availability, and another accepted student who finishes first may take it. Our banking details are in your acceptance email: use your student number or ID number as the reference, and keep your proof of payment.

What if I can only move in after 1 February?

That's fine, as long as you let your Property Manager know your arrival date before 1 February 2027. They'll note it on your file. If you haven't moved in by 1 February and we haven't heard from you, your room may be released to another student.

What should I bring when I move in?

Rooms and kitchens are fully furnished, so leave the furniture at home. Residents must bring their own bedding, pillows, towels, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, as well as a padlock to secure their food cupboard. Also bring your laptop and chargers, and an extension cord or multi-plug. Use only safe, approved electrical accessories and don't overload plug points.

Which documents do I need on move-in day?

Your proof of registration, your student card and ID, your bursary approval letter (if you have a bursary) and, for NSFAS students, proof of your current funding status from the NSFAS portal. We'll contact you if anything else is needed for your application.

Can I store my things over the December break?

If you're coming back in 2027, free storage for large items is available at some residences, first come, first served. Book it with your Property Manager before you move out, label everything with your name, student number and contact details, and have it in storage by 30 November. Collect it within 7 days of your return. Storage is at your own risk, and no food, valuables or flammable items. If you use storage but don't return in 2027, a storage fee of R500 a month for December and January (R1,000 in total) must be paid before your belongings are released.
