How it works

How NSFAS student accommodation works at Jezreel

The rules are simple, and they're the same at every Jezreel residence.

Your rent is the NSFAS rate

Rent is charged at the maximum approved NSFAS accommodation rate for the year. Under UJ policy, there are no top-ups.

NSFAS can't be paid out as cash

Your accommodation allowance goes to your residence. It can't be converted to cash.

If funding isn't approved

You are liable for rent at the cash rate for the months you stayed, so check your NSFAS status early.

Cash and bursary students too

NSFAS, bursary and cash-paying students live side by side. Rooms are R5,200 a month, the maximum approved NSFAS accommodation rate for 2026, and the rate may change for 2027. Cash-paying students can contact us directly to confirm the cash rate for their residence.

Supplementary exams

Writing supplementary exams (23–27 November 2026)? You can stay for the exam period, but everyone moves out by 30 November. Let your Property Manager know in advance.

One month's notice

To move out, give one calendar month's written notice on the 1st of the month.

All but one: 21 of our 22 residences are NSFAS-accredited. One residence operates strictly as a cash property, and each residence page shows its status.

Can I convert my NSFAS allowance to cash?

No. Your NSFAS accommodation allowance can't be converted to cash.

What if my NSFAS funding isn't approved?

You are liable for rent at the cash rate for the months you stayed.

Can I apply for more than one residence?

You submit one application, but it can include more than one residence. In step 3, Choose Your Residence, choose your first choice: this is your primary application. Then mark up to two other residences with Also consider. We'll look at those if your first choice is full.

Can I stay in my room for supplementary exams?

Yes, for the exam period. Supplementary exams run from 23 to 27 November 2026, and the move-out deadline of 30 November 2026 still applies to everyone. Tell your Property Manager in advance so your move-out can be arranged.

Where do I store my things over December?

Coming back in 2027? Free storage for large items is available at some residences over the December break. Book it with your Property Manager before you move out; everything must be in storage by 30 November. If you use storage but don't return in 2027, a fee of R500 a month for December and January applies.
